Former mayor and current Toronto city councillor Rob Ford will have surgery to remove a cancerous tumour on May 11.

At a news conference yesterday outside of Mount Sinai Hospital, he said the tumour in his abdomen has shrunk enough for surgery, while a second tumour in his back has “pretty well disappeared.”

“At least I have a second chance,” Ford said.

Ford, who thanked the public for an outpouring of support, expects to be in hospital for about two weeks after the surgery and hopes to be back moving around by Sept. 1.
