10 Things to do in Toronto for Family Day Weekend

Let’s face it, it’s been a long winter!  And as things continue to open across the city, this year’s Family Day weekend is the perfect opportunity to spend time with family, friends and loved ones.  So to help you make the most of your time together, we’ve rounded up some of the best things to do in the city.  From outdoor fires to climbing walls, there’s sure to be something of interest for everyone!

  1. Strap on your skates

Practice your skating at Celebration Square, Mississauga’s largest outdoor skating rink! From Friday February 18th to Monday February 21st, participating food trucks will be serving delicious treats that you can enjoy in heated outdoor seating areas.

  1. Cosy up at Ontario Place

Ontario Place, the well-known theme park that closed in 2012, is now a public space complete with parks and walking trails. You can reserve a fire pit to make some s’mores, grab some hot chocolate, and enjoy more family day activities at Ontario Place.

  1. Snowshoe through one of Toronto’s golf courses

As part of the Welcome T.O Winter Parks Plan to encourage outdoor exploration in the city, 4 golf courses in Toronto are open for snowshoeing. There are 7 different trails, or “Snow Loops,” ranging in length from 1 km to 2.5 km.

  1. Break a sweat

The Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre is hosting their 8th consecutive Free Family Fun Day on February 21st. You can book activities online for the family like zumba class or leisure swim, or book individual activities like lane swim, the children’s climbing wall, and more.

  1. Try on fun footwear at the Bata Shoe Museum

For a different kind of winter footwear, head to the Bata Shoe Museum! Admission is free on February 20th, but you do need to RSVP in advance to secure your spot. On February 21st, there will be a variety of Family Day activities to celebrate the opening of their new exhibit, The Story of Canadian Figure Skating.

  1. Toboggan at a local park

Did you know that the City of Toronto has 26 official toboggan hills? Check out all the toboggan locations, grab your sled and head to a hill near you for an easy family activity.

  1. View some outdoor art in the Beaches

Woodbine Beach is currently home to Winter Stations, a competition where international designers and artists reimagine and redesign the lifeguard stations along our waterfront. The giant art installation of 6 pieces opens on February 21st.

  1. Explore a winter wonderland

The staples of the winter season, snow, lights, music, and more, can all be found at Winter Glow at Black Creek Pioneer Village. This interactive art show is drive or walk thru on the weekend, and walk-thru only on Family Day.

  1. Hop in a tube

Most great tubing destinations are hours away from the city. Try heading to Mount Chinguacousy, about 45 minutes from the downtown core for tubing, skiing or snowboarding.

  1. Make the trek to The Royal Ontario Museum

This Family Day weekend at the ROM, there are a variety of special themed activity stations, and even 2 ‘hiking’ trails within the museum. Take advantage of their distance discount and save more on admission the further away you travel from.
