There will be a lot of barking at Toronto’s Municipal Licensing Committee meeting today – but don’t expect it from the animals!

City councillors will be addressing whether or not they should make regulations tougher for dogs deemed ‘aggressive’.

Right now, if a dog bites a person or another animal, the owner must simply muzzle the dog.

Moving forward, MLS wants behavioural training for the owner and dog, proof of owner liability insurance, a special licence tag, signs warning of the dangerous dog — and the dog must not leave the owner’s property.

If the owner refuses, the city would be able to add a fine for each day the offence continues and would have the right to enter the owner’s private property. MLS has also proposed to raise the fines significantly, from at least $500 to a maximum of $10,000, and have the ability to take the owner to court.
